Autumn in New England

Fall is coming! I can feel it in the air and see it in the subtle changes in the trees. What a wonderful season! From the frantic shopping this past weekend, I know school is starting. Even the grocery store was arranged differently. Displays of lunch snacks and easy to pack goodies had sprung up in the aisles. The beer selections now have fall flavors like pumpkin and spice. I love Fall. I’ll post pictures as I see the leaves changing. But until then, I’ll have to make do with a stock photo… sorry.

Autumn is around the corner!

Barrow, Alaska

On my first trip to the Arctic Circle, I had no idea how I would handle the cold. The sports gear stores in So Cal weren’t much help. I did it the old fashioned way – I layered! I looked like the Michelin man when I got off the plane, but I was warm!

I read up on the area as much as possible and asked my friends up there for advice. It helped somewhat, but in the end, experience is the best teacher. I was better prepared on the next trip.

I have a thing for clouds. I love ’em! So I try to take pictures of the ones that catch my eye. I love the transient nature of clouds. Capture the moment you see one, because it will change in the blink of an eye. There is nothing more creative and free flowing than cloud gazing. What do you see when you look up?

Look up and capture the cloud!

NASCAR experience

I went to a NASCAR race on Sunday in Loudin, NH. What a great experience! I’ve watched a few moments of a couple of races on TV, but being there is totally different. Bring earplugs because the noise level of the engines will blast your eardrums. But what an exciting sound! They rent headphones and radio so you can follow the race. It’s useless trying to hear the announcer. The power generated by the cars made the water in my water bottle vibrate and dance around. What a soul-pounding feeling!
The crowd was great. Very family friendly and easy-going. Helpful to newcomers (like me) and fun to be around. Not much talking going on, but lots of smiles, hat waving, and thumbs up signals. I’m certainly glad that I got to experience the real deal!

Lessons learned:
1) Bring water. Freeze it overnight so it stays cold
2) Bring a hat and dress comfortably
3) Bring a bandana or cloth to dampen and wear/wipe away the sweat
4) Bring a cushion or towel to sit on
5) Don’t forget your earplugs
6) Pack your snacks/lunch. Food and drinks are available for sale, but save a few dollars by packing your own.
7) Wear sunscreen and reapply. Sweating will wash it off.
8) Have a great time!

Start of the race.

The Ring

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Nichols Library

Stumbled across this beautiful old building in Kingston, NH. We had to turn around to take a closer look and get pictures. Traveling the USA has been an amazing experience. Beauty is found in some unexpected places and we get to experience it all.

If you have the opportunity to see America The Beautiful, take it! It’s so worth the time, price of gas, or whatever excuse you can come up with. Sure, we’ve had our share of trouble with internet connections, cell signals, and bum GPS directions; but every mile we’ve traveled has been an experience that cannot be taken away. Traveling keeps your brain stimulated and your spirit uplifted.

Travel on!

Bird feeder

Just a lazy summer day, watching the birds gather sunflower seeds from the bird feeder. A nice breeze is blowing and the music of the leaves rustling in the trees serenades us. Ah yes, life IS good!
